Arrival in Kasese – Nyakalengija Base Camp (1,646 m)

Arrive in Kasese and transfer to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park Headquarters at Nyakalengija for registration and briefing. Meet your guides and porters, check equipment, and begin the trek through the Bakonzo farmlands and Mubuku River valley to Nyabitaba Hut (2,652 m). Approx. hiking time: 5–6 hours.

Nyabitaba Hut – John Matte Hut (3,414 m)

Descend briefly to cross the Bujuku River, then climb through a dense forest of giant ferns, mosses, and lichen-draped trees. You’ll pass through Bamboo Zone and the start of Heather Zone, with chances to spot Rwenzori Turaco and Blue-headed Sunbird. Reach John Matte Hut for rest and acclimatization. Approx. hiking time: 6–7 hours.

John Matte Hut – Bujuku Hut (3,962 m)

The trail leads across the Bigo Bog, where wooden boardwalks help you navigate the deep swampy ground. Enjoy panoramic views of Mount Stanley and Mount Baker as you approach Bujuku Hut, nestled near the Bujuku Lake. The landscape changes dramatically into the alpine zone with lobelias and giant groundsels. Approx. hiking time: 5–6 hours.

Bujuku Hut – Elena Hut (4,541 m)

Continue through the upper Bujuku Valley with steep ascents on glacial moraine ridges. The vegetation thins out as you climb higher into the rocky alpine zone. Arrive at Elena Hut, base for those aiming for Margherita Peak (optional summit on Mount Stanley). Approx. hiking time: 4–5 hours.

Elena Hut – Margherita Peak (5,109 m) – Kitandara Hut (4,023 m)

Start early for a challenging ascent to Margherita Peak, Africa’s third-highest summit, via the Stanley Plateau. Expect to cross ice, snow, and rocky terrain. After the summit celebration and photos, descend to Kitandara Hut, set beside the beautiful Lower Kitandara Lake. Approx. hiking time: 9–10 hours (round trip). (Optional: Skip summit and descend directly to Kitandara Hut.)

Kitandara Hut – Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261 m)

Climb from the Kitandara Valley over the Freshfield Pass (4,282 m), then descend through the giant heather and alpine meadows. Enjoy sweeping views of the Rwenzori ranges and valleys before reaching Guy Yeoman Hut, surrounded by waterfalls and wildflowers. Approx. hiking time: 6–7 hours.

Guy Yeoman Hut – Nyakalengija Base (1,646 m)

Descend steadily through the bamboo and montane forest zones, following the Mubuku River back to Nyakalengija. This long descent offers one last chance to spot birds, monkeys, and the lush flora of the lower slopes. Approx. hiking time: 6–7 hours.

Return Journey & Departure

After breakfast, check out and depart Kasese. You may visit local cultural sites or stop at the Equator monument (optional) before continuing your journey or connecting to your next safari destination.
